The Department of Textiles and Clothing was started in the year 1957 as an integral feature of the Home Science Department.  Post Graduate course in Textiles and Clothing was started in 1967 followed by M.Phil programme in 1989 and Ph.D in 1991. Reviewing the fashion era, under graduate programme was started since 1991 named as Textiles and apparel designing. "Textiles and Clothing" is the study of fibres, yarns and fabrics used for various purposes with the main Thrust on clothing. The programme has been framed in such a way that it enhances the ability of students to apply knowledge and explore the methods that would be beneficial for the textile and related industries. The course contains an integrated curriculum right from Textile science, Wet processing,Fashion science and illustration, Technical textiles, Creative designing and construction, Management, Marketing, Quality control, Economics and so on.

               A new Post Graduate course by name "Bio-Textiles" has been introduced by the Department of Textiles and Clothing in collaboration with the Department of Bio-chemistry and Bio-Technology of Avinashilingam University from the year 2004-2005. This course mainly aims at using bio-friendly techniques and processes to meet the burning need of the textile  and processing industries. An industry based curriculum incorporates the latest environment friendly methods right from raw material to finished product.
